Genuine vs Fake Phone Parts: Why It Matters and How to Tell

5 min read · iPhone Doctor UG

Two screens or two batteries can look identical in photos and still be worlds apart in quality. Here's what actually separates them, and why it's worth asking about before any repair.

Screens: colour, touch, and how they're built

Lower-quality screens often show washed-out or slightly inaccurate colours, dimmer brightness at full setting, or a touch response that feels a fraction slower or less precise — sometimes called "ghost touch," where the screen registers taps that didn't happen. Cheaper screens are also more prone to poor lamination, which can show up as air bubbles or a slight gap between the glass and the display underneath, sometimes visible as a faint halo around the edges.

Batteries: this is where quality is a safety issue, not just a performance one

A poor-quality battery cell often lacks proper internal protection circuitry, which is what prevents overcharging, overheating, and swelling. This isn't a minor quality difference — it's the difference between a battery that degrades predictably over a year or two, and one that can swell, overheat, or in rare cases become a genuine fire risk. If a replacement battery is priced far below what seems reasonable, that's usually where the saving came from.

Cameras and other components

A lower-grade replacement camera module can show up as blurry photos, poor performance in low light, or autofocus that hunts and struggles to lock on — problems that are easy to miss in a quick test in the shop but become obvious the first time you actually try to use the camera.

Questions worth asking any repair shop

  • Where do your parts come from, and are they tested before fitting?
  • Is there a warranty on the part itself, separate from the labour?
  • Can I see the part before it's installed?

A shop that's confident in what it's using won't hesitate to answer these plainly.

Where we stand on this

We use quality parts and back every repair with a 60-day warranty on both the part and the work. If a part isn't good enough for us to put our name behind, we don't use it.
