iPhone “Unknown Part” or “Important Battery” message: what it means

3 min read · iPhone Doctor UG

You had a screen or battery replaced, or you bought a phone that has had a part changed, and now Settings shows “Unknown Part” or “Important Battery Message”. Here is what it means, in plain words.

The short answer

The iPhone cannot confirm that a part was registered by Apple. It is a notice, not a fault, and the phone keeps working. It is common after any repair done outside Apple, and on phones that have had parts changed.

Where you will see it

  • Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History on newer iPhones with a recent iOS. A replaced screen, battery or camera is listed there.
  • Settings > Battery > Battery Health on many iPhones, where a battery that cannot be verified shows an “Important Battery Message”.
  • A pop-up after the repair, usually once or twice. On many phones it then stays only in the list above.

What you see depends on the iPhone model and the iOS version.

Why it appears

Apple can only register and verify parts through its own repair system. A repair done anywhere else, even a good one, cannot be registered, so the iPhone shows a notice. The message does not judge the quality of the part. A good part can still show it, and a poor one can show it too, so the message alone cannot tell you which you have.

What it does and does not affect

It does not mean the phone is fake, stolen or iCloud locked, and it does not stop calls, apps, charging or updates.

With some aftermarket parts you may notice:

  • True Tone may not be available on some replacement screens.
  • The battery health percentage may not be shown for some replacement batteries.

Higher-grade parts usually behave closer to the original, which is why we offer a Genuine and an Aftermarket option on screens. If either of these matters to you, ask before the repair and we will tell you which part we would fit.

If you see a “Finish Repair” prompt

Some iPhones ask you to finish a quick set-up after a part is replaced. Update to the latest iOS, open Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History, tap the message and follow the steps (it may say “Restart & Finish Repair”). If you cannot find it, bring the phone in and we will do it with you.

Buying a phone with changed parts

Many people choose an iPhone with changed parts because it costs less than a UK used one. That is a fair choice if you know what you are buying. Ask the seller:

  • Which parts were changed: screen, battery, back glass or camera?
  • Are they genuine, original-grade or aftermarket?
  • What is the battery health, and does Settings show it?
  • Do True Tone and Face ID still work?
  • What warranty comes with the phone?

Also check the phone itself is genuine: dial *#06# to see the IMEI, then use “Know Your Device” at simu.ucc.co.ug. Want to see what we have? Changed Parts iPhones →

How we handle it

We tell you which part we fit before we start, and every repair has a 60-day warranty on the part and the work, whether or not the message appears. On our Changed Parts phones we tell you what was changed before you pay.

Questions people ask

What does “Unknown Part” mean on an iPhone?

It means the iPhone cannot confirm that a part, such as the screen, battery or camera, was registered through Apple’s own repair system. It is a notice, not an error, and the phone keeps working.

Is the “Important Battery Message” dangerous?

No. It means the iPhone cannot verify the battery as an Apple part. It is not a warning that the battery is faulty. A poor-quality battery can still be a real problem, so ask where the battery comes from and how it is covered.

Can the message be removed?

Not always. Only Apple’s own repair system can register a part, so the entry usually stays under Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History. The pop-up often shows once or twice and then stops. Be careful with anyone who promises to remove it for a fee.

Does it mean the phone is fake or stolen?

No. The message is only about replaced parts. To check the phone itself, dial *#06# to see the IMEI, then use Know Your Device at simu.ucc.co.ug.

Does the message affect my repair warranty?

No. Our 60-day warranty covers the part we fit and the work, whether or not the message appears.

Is a phone with changed parts a good buy?

It can be, if the price reflects it and you are told what was changed, what kind of parts they are and what warranty applies. Ask before you pay, and test the phone in the shop.
