Water damage isn't usually instant — it's the corrosion that builds up afterwards that causes the real, lasting damage. What you do in the first half hour can be the difference between a full recovery and a dead phone.
Step 1: Get it out of the water immediately
Every extra second submerged increases the risk. Don't pause to check notifications or take a photo of the moment — get it out first.
Step 2: Turn it off — and don't turn it back on to "check"
If it's already off, leave it off. If it's still on, power it down properly if you can do so quickly. The biggest risk with water damage isn't the water itself — it's water combined with an electrical current, which is what actually causes short circuits and permanent damage. Resist the urge to switch it on to see if it still works; that single check can turn a fixable situation into a write-off.
Step 3: Don't plug it in to charge
Same reasoning as above. Charging a wet phone is one of the fastest ways to cause irreversible damage.
Step 4: Remove the case and SIM tray, and dry what you can see
Take off any case, open the SIM tray, and gently pat down the outside and any visible openings with a soft, absorbent cloth. Don't shake the phone hard or blow into any ports — that can push water further into the device rather than out of it.
Step 5: Skip the rice
The classic bag-of-rice trick doesn't really work the way people think. Rice draws moisture from the surface, but it can't reach the water that's already worked its way inside the phone, and rice dust or small particles can end up stuck in your charging port or speaker grilles, causing a second problem. If you have silica gel packets (the kind that come in shoeboxes or with electronics), those are genuinely better at drawing out moisture — but neither replaces a proper internal clean.
Step 6: Get it to a professional as soon as you can
This is the step that actually matters most. The sooner a technician can open the device and clean the internal components before corrosion sets in, the better your chances of a full recovery. Waiting a day or two "to see if it dries out" is often what turns a fixable phone into one that isn't.
